Chandra’s 2018 Yamaha YZF-R15 "Tyrant"
Named after the bio-organic weapon from the Resident Evil video game series, Chandra’s 2018 Yamaha R15, dubbed "Tyrant" serves as his ongoing platform for mechanical experimentation. Over the years, the motorcycle has undergone multiple design iterations, evolving from a standard sportbike into a unique custom machine built for attacking corners.
Beyond its design, the motorcycle holds significant provenance for its owner. It is a family heirloom and the center of Chandra's riding community. Chandra has utilized the R15 as a continuous project, altering its geometry and aesthetics to fit different subcultures within the motorcycle world.
Tyrant has undergone countless iterations, some of which are:
Track-Inspired: Initial modifications focused on performance aesthetics and aggressive ergonomics suited for circuit riding.
Bosozoku: A later iteration adopted the exaggerated features of Japanese Bosozoku culture.
Current Specification: The motorcycle is currently set up in a Hashiriya style, paying homage to the Japanese street racers of the 1980s and 1990s.
To achieve the retro 90s racing silhouette, Chandra has heavily modified the R15's bodywork by retrofitting it with a front fairing modeled after the Honda NSR250, a staple of 90s two-stroke racing. A custom fabricated rear end designed to mimic the classic Grand Prix racing motorcycles. This bike has undergone countless modifications and given a vibrant custom paint job and livery to match the traditional Hashiriya aesthetic.
Community and Legacy
While the fiberglass and metal draw the eyes attention to this machine first the true value of Tyrant lies in connections it has brought its owner. A custom motorcycle is a rolling conversation starter, and for Chandra, this Yamaha has been not only the ice breaker but the grounding anchor in his community.
“It has taken me to places I never imagined and introduced me to people who have become family. Through this motorcycle, I’ve gained countless friends and brothers," he says.
The bike has been a catalyst for community, introducing him to people who have gone from "riding buddies" to becoming his chosen family. This motorcycle has grabbed attention locally in Jakarta but more notably world wide. Tyrant has been the introductory machine to Hashiriya for a lot of enthusiasts outside of Japan, becoming one of the most notorious machines in the modern day Hashiriya scene.
What does the future hold?
Well, the motorcycle is not for sale, regardless of buyers price. It is the sole possession left to Chandra by his late father. Because of this direct lineage, the bike carries a large sentimental value and historical significance to the Hashiriya community. Since the bike will never be sold, Chandra has established a strict succession plan for the Yamaha: he will continue to ride, maintain, and experiment with Tyrant until he has a child of his own. At that point, the motorcycle will be passed down to the next generation, preserving both the machine's history and his father’s memory.
This machine is rolling proof that a Hashiriya Motorcycle is more than just a “proper base”.
